TMD (Temporal Mandibular Disorder) or jaw pain at the joint, effects many people.  It can have a profound effect on our eating habits, sleeping and the amount of social talking we do.  Not to mention having to suffer through the pain itself.

Many people see their dentist for TMD which is a good place to start.  Here at Health Motion we work closely with your physician to correct the root of the problem which is usually found in the muscles of the face and neck which control the jaw itself.  If these muscles are out of balance or not working in concert with each other the jaw motion will not track smoothly or properly.  This misalignment results in torque or swelling at the joint.  The repetitive motion of the jaw for chewing and speaking will quickly lead to TMD pain and issues.

TMD is very treatable and is usually handled quickly by our skilled therapists.  We can return you to a pain free life of eating, talking and sleeping without TMD.

To find out what we can do for you, have your Dentist refer you to Health Motion Physical Therapy or come in for a free evaluation with one of our licensed physical therapists who will answer your questions and help you find a solution to your TMD.

I thought it was TMJ?

Many people still refer to jaw pain as TMJ which is short for Temporal Mandibular Joint, the joint for your bottom jaw.  The medical community has actually renamed this jaw pain and dysfunction at the temporal mandibular joint as Temporal Mandibular Disorder or TMD.  This was done to separate the name of the issue from the name of the joint.  So if you are wondering why your TMJ is now being called TMD, well, that is why.
